The comprehensive study of Music at Jackson provides cognitive growth
in the area of musical reading and writing in addition to enhancing all
aspects of a student’s social and intellectual development. Singing
is used as the primary tool to study children’s songs and folk music,
as well as art music through the ages.
In Music class, students learn to hear and identify different musical rhythmic and melodic patterns and motifs. This knowledge is then used to study and compare different songs and patterns and to understand the mathematical relationships that occur in top-quality musical literature.
We focus on seven skill areas: melodic, rhythmic, two part work, writing, improvisation, listening and performance skills. While all of the skills are practiced during classes, performance skills are also developed at two all school concerts each year.
Third graders are introduced to instrumental music with the recorder program. These students learn to read notes and to understand the basics of playing a wind instrument. Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students perform in chorus, giving them the opportunity to study vocal technique. In addition to performing at the school concerts, the choruses have gone out into the community to give concerts.
