The Computer Technology program is designed to support and enhance
the school’s curriculum. Fluency in technology is integrated across
the curriculum by providing students with experiences using word processing,
drawing and painting programs, spreadsheets and databases and navigating
and researching on the Internet. Projects in each of these areas are
tied closely with students’ work across our curriculum. Students
are also encouraged to enhance their projects with telecommunications
through e-mail and the exchange of multimedia files created with digital
and video cameras. To ensure Internet accessibility for students and
faculty, every classroom has wired and wireless Internet capabilities.
Ongoing in-service technical training is provided to faculty and staff.
A key component of the Computer Technology program at Jackson has been participation in the sitesALIVE! Program, Ocean Challenge Live! Students in all grades followed skipper Rich Wilson on a trimaran as he sailed from New York City to Melbourne and again from Hong Kong to New York City. Exchange of text files, e-mail, real audio, video and digital images, and conversations over satellite phone enhanced the cross-curricular experience for our students. These semester-long programs concluded with the skipper’s visit and presentation at our school. During the year, students developed a keen awareness of their role in the global community. Online excursions and e-pal exchanges are part of our program and show students the value and importance of technology to each of us.
