The Art program at Jackson has been established to educate students in
the essential aspects of art including Creative Expression, Art Processes
and Art History. Students learn different ways to integrate personal expression
into each project. They are encouraged to use a variety of materials to
express and interpret their ideas. Each student develops a foundation for
the technical application of a variety of art materials. Projects are designed
to encourage critical thinking and involve students in active learning.
Art classes are cumulative so students build on what they know and move
into higher levels of understanding. Students also view and discuss artwork
and artists throughout history. This study helps students understand how
artists and/or ethnic cultures generate their ideas for work and how these
ideas are expressed. All students participate in developmentally appropriate
projects in a cross section of fine arts. These include drawing, painting,
printmaking, sculpture, design and crafts. We also use technology to expand
our students’ experiences in our Art program through the integration
of graphic and media arts. Each student develops a portfolio of work that
is showcased in the school’s Festival for the Arts each spring.
